Newborn Guide

Thank you for choosing me to photograph your baby, I am looking forward to having you in the studio.

A newborn session is 2hrs long. All babies are different and some settle quicker than others. Your session may possibly be shorter than this. However, baby is the boss and ultimately, they decide. To help the session run smoothly I have created a session guide for you.

Lets get you prepare...

Before you come to the studio give baby a full feed just before you leave and a good burp. A full comfortable tummy will help your baby settle. I advise that you bring baby in a white sleep suit, with no vest underneath. I first photograph baby in their sleep suit and having no vest underneath makes it less disturbing for baby when changing them.

Your session is baby led. If we need to stop halfway through for a nappy change or a top up feed that's absolutely fine. There is no rush or pressure during the session. Not only do I have lots of patience and experience but I also allow plenty of time between clients.

LETS talk about the session style...

Your questionnaire that you filled out helps me get an idea of what you would like during your session. The most frequently asked question, 'what should I wear?' I always recommend neutral tones, earthy tones or black. Whilst I don't recommend matching family outfits, I do recommend similar colour tones that complement one another. I also advise that you avoid patterns or large logos on your clothing to keep your images timeless. However, this is just a recommendation, the session is yours and wear what you feel most comfortable in.

Bringing siblings along...

Are you worried that your children won't play ball? Don't.

There is no pressure on your children to 'perform' at the session, natural shots are always best. Of course I always aim for them to give me a cheeky little smile and I have lots of tricks up my sleeve to achieve this. However, I like to shoot in a fun and relaxed manner so there is no pressure on them to be looking at the camera with big perfect smiles in every shot.

Siblings might get bored during the session so I do advise that you bring distractions with you like flash cards or downloading their favourite film on your phone/iPad. Snacks are also a great idea too.

TIPS

ARRIVE EARLY!

5 minutes early is perfect, this way you won't be stressing and rushing. Those extra minutes allow you time to make sure children are all neat and tidy before you come down to the studio. Please plan ahead of time and use your maps to determine how long it may take to arrive at the studio. Please remain in the car until I have responded to your message as I may be with clients in the studio.

REMOVE HAIR TIES

Double check your wrists and children's for hair ties or even smart watches.

Toasty studio

The studio is nice and toasty for baby. As a mum myself, I know of those postpartum hot flushes. Bring water with you, especially if you're a breastfeeding mummy. A handheld fan is never a bad idea either!
